Reflection Paper Sample on the Academic Course

I have always been interested in Linguistics because this subject exists on the measure of creativity and precision. It is like the combination of something abstract and concrete. I took the course of Corpus Linguistics to find out more about this modern branch of this science and understand how well I can understand and use it in practice. I was deeply amazed to find out how complicated this subject can be if you use sophisticated programs which our university owns. It was a real “scientific adventure” for me to try building a corpus of the English Written Language and analyze various linguistic characteristics there.
I always felt that my critical thinking does not always function in a quick way. Therefore, I wanted to boost it by attending the course in Corpus Linguistics. Trying to focus on developing analytical thinking helped me to see the subject from an objective side as much as possible. And it is no wonder because for a future linguist it is vital to learn to perceive the data without bias. During the preparation of my homework, I tried to put emphasis on continuously asking myself why something is explained this or that way. Digging the core was my main objective. Each new text for building a corpus was a challenge for me because I had to be meticulous and attentive. This care for detail helped avoid many mistakes which I spotted before submitting the final paper. When I read my first texts with the results of the experiment, I understand how thorough each work was. It means that with this course I managed to improve my critical and analytical skills which both Corpus and General Linguistics require.

I considered grammar to be my biggest strength since school. I liked learning the rules and understanding their logical correlation. However, when it comes to exceptions, I can’t keep them in my hand because of the lack of logical explanation. Thanks to this course, I focused on creating tables which structured those grammatical exceptions into categories. I think that I can use this idea and continue its development with my coursework for this year.

Another significant improvement is teamwork and leadership qualities. For the course project presentation, we had to work in teams of 4 where each had a specific role and responsibilities. I was happy when my team chose me as a leader, although it was quite worrying. This extra duty gave me invigoration to work even harder to make our project the best. I delegated the responsibilities, although I usually preferred to say that nobody can do better than you. This project changed my opinion regarding this stereotype because I virtually could not cover all the tasks. I relied on my groupmates and gave them lots of tasks. It was a great experience for me to delegate the responsibilities, control the process, and evaluate the results. I suppose this feature will help me in the future if I become a leader of similar projects.

As to my gaps or negative sides of the course, I cannot mention much because it was a great pleasure taking this subject. The only one aspect I can mention is that the theme of AntConc usage was the most difficult for me. From my perspective, this system is outdated, and there was no use focusing our attention on it so much. However, it was nice to learn about such programs which boosted the development of Corpora Analysis of Languages.
